2010 Old Vine Grenache

The Story

Once upon a time, long, long ago, in a country far, far away (well, that bit might not be true) there lived some old Grenache vines and they struggled and they toiled and every year they’d produce a modest crop of intensely flavoured berries that they were very, very proud of. And each year they’d send the berries away to a castle (are you sure?) to be made into delicious wine by a kind–hearted but rather ugly ogre (now that’s just mean). And then all the people would come from far and wide to drink the wine, and then go to sleep if it made them tired. But one year the ogre forgot about the wine and a wicked fairy seized her chance and cast a sleeping spell on the lovely Grenache, and on and on it slumbered. Until, magically, one day the ogre was turned into a handsome prince and with the help of a fair maiden he broke the curse and the Grenache awoke at last, after 11 long years and changed into a pumpkin, then a unicorn and finally a very delicious wine. And (of course) they all lived happily ever after.

The Wine

Eleven years is a long time and while most wines derive secondary flavours from ageing, here we think there’s been plenty of time for tertiary and even quaternary, quinary and senary flavours to form. First up, though, it’s an amazing colour for a wine that’s been in oak for 11 years. And on the nose, its got fruitcake, dark mixed berries, vanilla, chocolate, clove, anise and some really complex savoury aromas. Warming and smooth on the palate, almost creamy, it’s got lovely sweet fruit, still with an astonishing freshness, and, again, there is a complexity that only age can bring. Enjoy it now; we don’t think you’ll find a table wine aged in barrel for this length of time anywhere else in the world. (Note to wine geeks: Vega Sicilia Reserva Especial in Spain comes closest at “up to 10 years” but it’s a blend of 3 vintages and its a very, er, reasonable $1100 a bottle).
