- Description
In 2016 the vineyard decided to rein things back (a little), and the fruit that it gave us has resulted in a Denis with just the merest touch of restraint (all things are relative of course). It still has the tar and the spice and the inky depths that we love and that make this such a distinctive wine, but it’s just a whisker more approachable this time, a little less forbidding and surly. Having said all that this is still a monumental Shiraz with a tannin structure that evokes the interior of a gothic cathedral. But there’s more fruit standing forward into the light than a Denis would normally have at this stage, and it’s a delicious bramble and cassis fruit, so our advice is do drink some now (and perhaps decant first) but have it with something suitably full flavoured. If you don’t have well-hung grouse to hand try it with a pepper-encrusted rump of kangaroo.

October 29, 2019 13:30Gloriously fruited and magnificently styled, the wine shows blackberry, plum jam, dark spice, cedar and truffle characters on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate that is powerful and opulent, while remaining perfectly harmonious and balanced. It is multi-layered and symphonic with lavish texture and outstanding depth. At its best: 2022 to 2036.
