2016 Jeanneret Cabernet Malbec
- Clare Valley
- Bottle size
- 750 mL
Almost black with a bright purple rim. Impossibly rich nose of cassis and red berries with big spicy notes complimenting the medley of aromas. The palate is textured and mouth watering with great firmness and grip from the cabernet and a big fleshy middle thanks to that fantastic, dark, savoury malbec. It’s very, very approachable now and will gain character and complexity over the next 5 years or so.

This is delectably expressed on the nose showing crème de cassis, mixed berry compote, cedar, violet, game and cocoa characters. It is wonderfully fruited and generous on the palate, delivering powerful fruit flavours backed by supple mouthfeel and chalky tannins. Mouthfilling and expansive with a persistent silky finish. At its best: 2019 to 2026.
Clare cabernet malbec is definitely a good vibe. Soft, supple, juicy, fleshy, full flavoured red of deep, dark, sweet fruit character, lavish spice, inky depth and palate staining satisfaction. Bold as it is, it holds good drinkability, a sense of lavish flavour and generally a lush hit of wine. In its style, done very well.
A 65/35% blend, picked from 5 Mar to 8 Apr, average 28 days on skins, matured for 14 months in oak. A big wine, with its fair share of tannins, but is balanced by deep fruit.
If there’s one red blend that Clare region really does proud, it’s the marriage of cabernet sauvignon with malbec, from cult producers through to this great value version that’s 65:35 cabernet-dominant, harvested from two vineyards in eight passes to get the flavour and structural balance bang on, delivering a bloody terrific, full-bodied, black-berried, rich, juicy, yet earthy and grainy coated wine. Robust to the core.
